Does Garda Vetting expire? Re-vetting in Irish sport explained

Why clubs must check their own governing body's re-vetting policy instead of relying on one universal expiry period.

Short answer: there is no safe universal “expiry date” that every Irish sports club can apply. Sport Ireland tells clubs to refer to their own NGB or organisation's safe-recruitment procedure for re-vetting.

Why different answers appear online

Policies can differ between sports and can change. At the time this page was reviewed, the GAA stated that its vetting lasts three years. The FAI stated a maximum re-vetting period of three years, while reserving the possibility of a shorter period and identifying role changes as a reason for a new application.

Those are organisation-specific rules, not a general rule that should be copied to every sport. Sport Ireland also says that vetting for one organisation does not remove the need to be vetted for a position in another organisation.

What clubs should record

Review the underlying policy before sending a renewal reminder. A tracking system can alert the club to a date, but it cannot decide which policy applies.
